I do not have a clear answer as there is none but I can give you my view on things. What I do know is what is (often) stopping it. To be frank, most of the time I feel (see and hear) it is our inability to see beyond the (possible) road blocks. It is our fear for failure, fear for the unknown and our daily deadlines and jobs that we have on top of our priority lists.
It starts with our philosophy on learning, the time and place we live in and our innovative will. Over the years I have noticed the world of education is embracing new technologies and many educators around the world have taken that first step to integrate ICT in their lessons and schools. I have been working within International schools for the last 12 years and within that educational world, positive things are happening!
If you do not yet believe that ICT can enhance learning (in PE) I suggest you start reading and listening to those who have used it and see what their experiences are. Twitter is the best place to start and it will immediately help you to find the answers that you are looking for. Feel free to act as devil's advocate but be willing to embrace ICT. The twitter community (#physed, #pechat, #peplc and #pegeek) has brought forward so many great ideas already that implementing a few of those ideas will keep you busy for a while.
So, in short, start with that first step, give it a try! Learn from others and share your thoughts, ideas and worries! Be willing to totally mess it up and learn from it, try it again and realize that even the 2nd time it did not work well at all. It takes courage and perseverance to try, and try again but how can we promote risk-taking, open-mindedness and creativity among our students if we are not fully embracing it ourselves in our profession? I do not like the word failing and feel it is used way to often in articles and on twitter. Each school community should have the goal, aim and objective to eradicate the "fear for failure" and instead promote Innovation as that will push education forward!
For those educators who are beyond the starting point of trying..... don't stop trying, things move quickly and will only speed up. Continue and share everything you do through a blog, twitter, facebook etc. There are many blogs around but not many people leave replies. It is great fun for a blogger to get feedback, it keeps people moving forward! Let's join forces like peplc has done and further develop our global community, focusing on innovating education.
Let me be clear, technology can support and promote the learning in your subject but at the same time you need to use your common sense and avoid using technology simply because it is cool and trendy. It is a tool to promote and enhance learning within your subject, sometimes it is better not to use it!
For me, I use technology for the following reasons:
- Bridge the gap between social and educational life.
- Provide immediate,specific visual feedback
- Promote, provide differentiated lessons.
- Develop independent learning
- Reflection and assessment
- Maximize resources available
- Offer varied teaching methods
- Excite and connect with students
- Promote creativity, expression, sharing (hopefully publishing in the future!)
* This lists changes all the time, things get added, taken off etc.
I use QR-codes a lot, socrative as a reflection tool, iPad as white board and video/photo for (s)portfolio and evidence of learning, started with exergame Ball Strike, youtube as channel to store instruction video's and clips I use during class, screen in class, Beamer, Itunes for playlist, and several apps (better look on thepegeek.com for possibilities)
See some of my other blogs to get an idea what technologies I use in my lessons. My blogs are my own thoughts, my ideas and reflections!
