What we did:
We linked our own made Gymnastics instruction video's with QR codes (see our ICT page). When working in class we had several stations where students could use iPod touches to scan QR codes and video each other when performing. Each station had several levels with each level having an instructional video. Each station had either an iPod touch or an iPad. Students were instructed to go through the levels and when an activity was complicated and involved risk, they needed to see the teacher before trying.
Before we started with the iPods and working on multiple stations, students were instructed and trained on the basic level required to get started.
Result:
Because we started with 2 instructional lessons, safety was guaranteed and students were well instructed what to do and how to deal with the freedom and responsibility in class. Students kept to the instruction that when progressing, they needed to check in with their teacher before moving further.
In short, we saw the following:
- High level of Independent learning
- High level of student responsibility
- High level of motivation by all students, regardless of ability.
- Eagerness to do well!!
My talented athletes and gymnast had so much room and freedom to push themselves to a high level. There was no need to wait, they could keep on going.
In the video (link below) you see students checking QR codes before starting an activity. The last student came, with checking with me for safety, to this high level on the swinging trapeze. It was a very cool moment and hopefully it inspires you too. If you want to know more, leave a comment or email me and I am happy to share more details.
