Movement or dance is always one of those units where you have to have some rhythm in your body in order to get the class swinging. It isn't always easy! Although I do have two right feet I do like to hand the responsibility of learning back to the students. That is were the QR codes come to life!
The zumba dance unit kicked off with a general introduction followed by testing the waters about the student knowledge of zumba (where it originated, what they associated with this type of dance, etc) through the use of Socrative (www.socrative.com). The answers were surprising and it is good to realize what the knowledge level of our students actually is before we start. After a 20 minute focus on beat recognition, some simple steps and a couple of basic zumba steps the students got to work on their own using an iPad and the Zumba QR code worksheet.
In groups of two/three the students started to learn the basic zumba moves from a instructor that can swing her hips a lot better then I can! Through the use of the QR code the student can open the video and repeat it as many times as required to master the steps completely. The worksheet has 4 different moves to allow students to progress at their own speed and to cater for all levels. We finishGive it a try, get moving!
